We have been notified by USDA that all states must now allow white potatoes to be eligible for purchase no later than July 1, 2015, using the WIC cash-value benefit. The Michigan WIC Program has elected to implement this required change effective MAY 1, 2015.
This USDA policy revision prohibits exclusion or restriction of the eligibility of any variety of fresh, whole, or cut vegetables (except those with added sugars, fats, or oils) from being provided by the WIC program, unless otherwise determined by the USDA.
You are being made aware of this change ahead of the implementation date in order for you to make any necessary changes to their WIC processing systems. Additionally, all WIC authorized vendors will receive notification of this change via Vendor Newsletter communication and a separate WIC Vendor Minimum Stock Requirements mailing.
Please contact Ed Dichoza, WIC Vendor Relations Analyst, at (517) 241-3598 with any questions or concerns.
