As you are already probably aware, effective January 1st, 2017, the State of Michigan’s tax on fuels will increase: 7.3 cents per gallon on gasoline and 11.3 cents per gallon on diesel fuel, bringing the total Michigan Tax on both products up to 26.3 cents per gallon. Under Michigan law, whenever the tax imposed on gasoline or diesel fuel is increased, previously taxed fuel held in storage is subject to the tax increase and tax must be reported and paid to the Michigan Department of Treasury based on the increased rate.
You should have received a letter from the Michigan Department of Treasury explaining the tax increase and the form you must use to report the gallons of fuel in your underground storage tanks as of the close of business on Saturday, December 31st, 2016. If you did not receive such a letter a copy of the letter and Inventory Report is attached.
Questions about the procedure can be directed to Danielle Cook at 517.636.7833, at the Michigan Department of Treasury.
