LEAN CUISINE® Culinary Collection Mushroom Mezzaluna Ravioli
Nestle Prepared Foods Company has announced a voluntary recall of two production codes of LEAN CUISINE® Culinary Collection Mushroom Mezzaluna Ravioli, UPC 13800-58358. The production codes are 2311587812 and 2312587812; the “best before date” appears as DEC 2013. The products were distributed nationwide. The reason for the recall is that the meal may contain fragments of glass. The voluntary recall is limited to these two days of production in early November 2012. No other production dates, sizes, or varieties of LEAN CUISINE products are affected by this recall. Due to its popularity, Nestle believes very little remains in retail distribution.
Salmonella Typhimurium Outbreak Grows
An emerging outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium has expanded to five states with 16 people infected—including nine in Michigan—with the outbreak strain, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta says. No deaths have been reported, but 53 percent of the ill persons have required hospitalization.
Local, state, and federal public health officials and regulatory agencies are involved in a collaborative investigation that has concluded ground beef produced by Jouni Meats Inc. and Gab Halal Foods, both in Michigan, are the likely sources of the pathogen. Seven people in Michigan reported eating raw ground beef kibbeh (a dish typically made of finely ground red meat, usually beef, minced onions, and bulghur wheat) at the same Macomb County restaurant before becoming ill. The restaurant acquired the raw beef from the two retailers and served the raw beef to customers.
Jouni Meats has recalled about 500 pounds of ground beef productsand Gab Halal Foods has recalled about 550 pounds of ground beef products. Public health officials including the CDC urge consumers to avoid eating raw or undercooked ground beef.
Annie’s Homegrown Frozen Pizza

The company announced the recall after learning a fine metal mesh screen failed at a third-party flour mill and fragments of flexible metal mesh were found in the flour and pizza dough. All Annie’s manufacturers have comprehensive metal control programs that include magnets and metal detection devices. Pieces of the fine wire were too small to be detected and could have found their way into the finished product. While no metal has been found in Annie’s finished product, as a precaution, Annie’s initiated this voluntary recall. There have been no consumer complaints, illnesses or injuries reported to date. Consumers with questions may call Annie’s Homegrown Pizza Recall Hotline at 1-888-825-6720 or visit www.annies.com/pizzarecall for more information.
